What is Dry Ice used for?
Dry ice is used in many industries for storage and transport of pharma material, ice blasting, quick freezing processes and entertainment. Birka BioStorage has it’s own high capacity productions units in Lund with various sizes of dry ice pellets.
Dry ice is CO2 in its solid form. It is a dense, icelike substance that sublimes at −78.5 °C. It leaves no water when ”melting” and that’s the reason why it’s called ”dry” ice. Dry ice is used primarily as a coolant for different kinds of processes such as freezing of material, transport of pharmaceuticals and other goods, blast cleaning and even for the entertainment sector in fog machines and other dramatic effects. It is even used at private parties just for fun, especially around Halloween. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue. It is useful for preserving frozen goods where mechanical cooling is unavailable.
Safety Instructions for Dry Ice
Protection
Dry ice temperature is -78.5°C and this extreme cold makes it dangerous to handle without protection. Always handle dry ice with care and wear proper thermal insulated gloves and protective goggles. Prolonged contact with the skin can freeze cells and cause severe skin damage similar to a burn.
Ventilation
It is very important to always keep proper air ventilation where dry ice is stored because it sublimates into large quantities of carbon dioxide gas. This gas will replace oxygenated air, which will make you breathe in too much carbon dioxide gas. A small amount will probably result in a headache and quicker breathing (hypercapnia) but the worst consequence is suffocation.

Uses for Dry ice
Transport – dangerous goods (un1845)
Although dry ice is not classified as a dangerous substance, there are regulations for transport to consider. If it’s transported inside a car or van make sure there is fresh air circulating.
Storage / packaging
To prevent a too rapid sublimation of dry ice, use an insulated but not airtight container. The thicker the insulation, the slower the dry ice will sublimate. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide gas so make sure to use a container that allows the release of the pressure to prevent rupturing the package. Use good quality fiberboard (corrugated cardboard), plastic, styrofoam or wooden boxes. Ensure the styrofoam is NOT sealed to be airtight. Plan to get your delivery of dry ice as close to the time needed as possible. Every 24 hours dry ice sublimates at 10%, or 2-5 kilos, whichever is greater.
