The milestone event brought together over 150 guests, including customers, service partners, shareholders, and representatives from the City of Lund’s Department of Business Development, Företagarna, Ideon Science Park, Lund’s New Business Centre, as well as friends and family.
The day not only marked the expansion of Birka BioStorage but also underlined its growing role as a key enabler in the global life science ecosystem. Attendees were treated to a special musical performance inspired by Viking-era traditions, creating a memorable cultural atmosphere that echoed Birka’s Scandinavian heritage.
In his opening speech, Ali Ismail, Founder and Commercial Director of Birka BioStorage, reflected on the company’s remarkable journey — from a modest 6 sqm office at Ideon to today’s thriving international operation serving life science R&D projects in over 50 countries.

A highlight of the program was a dynamic customer panel discussion featuring clients from several countries. Another panel focused on Birka’s contribution to Lund’s and the region’s growth as the largest Nordic hub for the management of critical research samples. Industry experts, business leaders, and local stakeholders discussed how Birka’s presence is helping to attract new investments, foster innovation, and strengthen the region’s global position in life sciences.
The new facility, representing 40% of Birka’s 2030 growth vision, is equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure to meet the rising demand for secure, professional biostorage. It will further enhance the company’s capacity to serve the evolving needs of biotech, pharma, and academic customers worldwide.
